Work is generally performed in the classroom, on the playground or in a workroom or office setting, all in support of the teacher's responsibilities to the instructional program. Position may require supervision of students before and after school and crossing the street. Positions within this class require the ability to work constructively with children under the direction of a certificated staff member. Levels within this class are differentiated by virtue of the degree of skills and expertise required to perform successfully within the assignment. Positions within this class are under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher and under the general supervision of the school administrator or designee. POSITION DEFINITION:Under general supervision to assist teachers in authorized specialized instructional duties; supervise the classroom, playground activities, and the arrival and dismissal of children; to relieve teachers of routine tasks and clerical duties; and do related work as required.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:*Listen to and drill individuals or small groups of students in reading, spelling, mathematics and other subjects according to instructions*Perform a variety of routine and record-keeping activities such as taking roll, collecting money, filling out forms and applications, and correcting papers*Assist the teacher in maintaining classroom discipline*Set up and arrange supplies and equipment in the classroom for student use*Prepares labels, charts, bulletin boards and displays as instructed*Decorate classrooms*Assist with special health care needs of students*Assist with special physical and emotional needs of students*Operate various office equipment*Operate various audio-visual equipment*Supervise activities of children on the playground or in the cafeteria and maintain order*Assist students in crossing the street safely*Supervise students before and after schoolEMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:Education and Experience - Associates of Arts degree or an Aide Certificate and one year of experience as an instructional aide; or equivalent to graduation from high school, three years of experience as an instructional aide and demonstrated competence in a school setting; and formal or on the job training and a demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the specialized instructional skill areas, such as: visual and auditory perception, or gross motor body movement.Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of general needs and behavior of children and subject matter to be taught, proficiency in spelling, English, grammar and punctuation; ability to communicate, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers and parents; ability to perform clerical assignments including operation of a typewriter, calculator and standard copy equipment; ability to carry out oral and written directions; ability to be self directed, motivated, use initiative appropriately, and to organize work load as necessary. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines Able to conduct verbal conversation in English and other designated languages Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels) Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, walk Able to stand on hard flooring for sustained periods of time. Able to walk on hard flooring for sustained periods of time. Able to climb slopes, stairs and ladders. Able to push and/or pull a variety of tools and equipment.
