Work is generally performed in the classroom, on the playground or in a workroom or office setting, all in support of the teacher's responsibilities to the instructional program. Position may require supervision of students before and after school and crossing the street. Positions within this class require the ability to work constructively with children under the direction of a certificated staff member. Levels within this class are differentiated by virtue of the degree of skills and expertise required to perform successfully within the assignment. Positions within this class are under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher and under the general supervision of the school administrator or designee. POSITION DEFINITION:Under direct supervision, to assist teachers in the general education program in supervising the classroom, playground activities, and the arrival and dismissal of children; to assist the teacher in providing individual and small group instruction to students; to relieve the teacher of routine clerical duties; and to do related work as required.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:*Listens to and drills individuals or small groups of students in reading, spelling, mathematics and other subjects according to instructions*Performs a variety of routine and record-keeping activities such as taking roll, collecting money, filling out forms and applications, and correcting papers*Assists the teacher in maintaining classroom discipline*Sets up and arranges supplies and equipment in the classroom for student use*Prepares labels, charts, bulletin boards and displays as instructed*Decorates classrooms*Operates various office equipment*Operates various audio-visual equipment*Supervises activities of children on the playground or in the cafeteria and maintains order*Assist students in crossing the street safely*Supervise students before and after school EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and at least one year of experience as an instructional aide, preferably with children.Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of general needs and behavior of children, correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and subject matter to be taught. Ability to maintain composure under stress, establish and maintain effective relationships with adults and students, perform routine clerical work, operate standard office machines, understand and carry out written directions, and assume responsibility.PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines Able to conduct verbal conversation in English and other designated languages Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels) Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, walk Able to stand on hard flooring for sustained periods of time. Able to walk on hard flooring for sustained periods of time. Able to climb slopes, stairs and ladders. Able to push and/or pull a variety of tools and equipment.
